English Literary Day

The Department of English Language & Literature organized an English Literary Day on May 10th, 2017. The Chief Organizer of the event was Ms. Henna Karamat, Assistant Professor, In-Charge, Dept. of English while the main organizers were Ms. Shumaila Ashee, Ms. Hira Ahad and Ms. Madeeha Iqbal, Dept. of English.

The event went successful due to the support and encouragement of the worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana who graced the occasion as a Chief Guest. The judges for the best performance and performer of the day were among the main guests, named, Dr. Farhat Amin, In-Charge, Dept. of Bio-informatics and Ms. Sobia Karamat, Dept. of Women Development. The event started with the national anthem, which was followed by a number of tragic and comic scenes, taken from the master pieces of English and Urdu Literature. The first performance was a contemporary dance based on the poem by Maya Angello, named, “Still I Rise" which was performed by the students of Undergraduate program. The next performance was based on the drama, The Tragic History of the Life & Death of Dr. Faustus, by Christopher Marlowe. The dramatized version was based on “The Seven Deadly Sins" of the Elizabethan Age, which are still prevailing in the 21st century. The mock heroic epic, Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope was also performed on the stage by the students of 4th semester, undergraduate program. Though the above performance was the depiction of the trivial matters but it highlighted the conflicts between the two elite families, which further gave the glimpse of highlighted idleness of high class society of 18th century, the manners of the people and their interests, which mostly revolved social acceptability. The next performance lightened up the mood of the audience with the echo of laughter as it was a skit based on “Mind your Language." It gained a lot of applause from the audience as comedy always rules the heart. It is wisely said that Literature is incomplete without mentioning the name of William Shakespeare. Hence, the next performance was the dramatized version of the tragedy, Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, which was a kind of dedication to Mashal Khan, a young and intellectual student at the Dept. of Journalism, who was brutally lynched by his own friends at the main premises of the University. The next, a sole tribute to Mashan Khan, was a poem written by one of the students of the Dept. of English, SBBWUP. Lined up next was a tribute to the poets of Urdu Literature, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Faiz Ahmad Faiz, who played important roles in the fight to freedom of Pakistan. The last performance was a motivational role play, arranged by the students of Masters Program.

At the end of the event, Ms. Henna Karamat acknowledged the moral support and encouragement received by the worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Razia Sultuana; she appreciated the efforts of the main organizers and the participants. She also thanked all the audience and the faculty of the Dept. of English, the Provost, Dept. of Works and A.O office. The event ended up on the motivational and inspirational speech by the worthy Vice Chancellor SBBWUP, Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana, in which she enlightened the audience about the need of such events which play integral role in making future leaders of Pakistan good humans. She mentions about virtues and evils which are still prevailing in the society of 21st century, inherited to us from our ancestors. She acknowledged the role of youth in changing stereotypical mind sets for the bright and prosperous future. In addition to this she promised students and faculty to provide them such platforms where they can safely share their thoughts and talents. The speech was followed by the certificate distribution among the organizers and participants, followed by the announcement of the best performance award, attributed to the performance on “The Rape of the Lock."
