World Thalassemia Day

Department of Zoology, SBBWUP organized a session regarding “World Thalassemia Day” in the campus. The aim was to create awareness among the students and general public regarding Thalassemia.  Dr. Rabia Ijaz, Incharge department of Zoology briefed the audience about the disorder, its causes and the symptoms especially with reference to the children. She stated that the disorder is becoming common among children and leads to fatal results due to abnormality/deficiency in hemoglobin production in the human body. She also added that this disorder, as it is progressing rapidly is affecting lives of children. The main symptoms include slow growth in children, wide or brittle bones, fatigue, weakness, heart diseases, digestion issues etc. The patients require regular blood infusions, surgery, bone marrow transplant etc. 

The students also prepared different models related to thalassemia which were assessed by the Vice Chancellor.  She was briefed about the respective models by the students.

While addressing the audience, Dr. Naseem Akhter, VC highly appreciated the efforts made by the students to create 3D models. She also appreciated the faculty members who supported and guided the students. She said that our students are very creative and have an ability to take initiatives no matter from which discipline they belong. She also said that every discipline/department must initiate awareness campaigns about the issues related to their respective fields for the general community and students of the university by investing their precious time in conducting research. While talking about World Thalassemia Day she said that we must initiate blood donation campaigns and aware the society so that it may ignite hope among the patients suffering from this disorder and we may be able to contribute our part in saving precious lives.
