DNA day is celebrated worldwide on 25^th April every year. The Department of Zoology, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar has arranged a celebration of DNA day on 8^th May, 2019 under the theme DNA: The basis of life on earth. The purpose of celebrating this day was to aware students with the importance of DNA in life. DNA plays a crucial role in the inheritance of characters, coding for proteins and guide for life and its processes. It is important in forensic, paternal and suspect case identification and diagnosis of different diseases and many more. The Chief Guest for the day was Worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University, Peshawar. The celebration started with the recitation of Holy Quran and Naat shareef. Students presented different posters and models to explain structure and function of DNA. Importance of DNA was well presented in stage performances on different real life stories including murder of a maid by her mistress, murder of business partner for property, murder of teenage girl for family revenge etc. Other ideas include baby exchange case in hospital and awareness skit for health professionals to protect DNA during body organ treatment. Worthy Vice Chancellor delivered her speech and appreciated the efforts of head of department (Dr. Rabea Ejaz), Chief Organizer (Dr. Iram Maqsood) and faculty organizers (Dr. Asima Azam, Ms. Saira Saleem, Ms. Ambar Shaheen, Ms. Noor Jahan, Ms. Nawal Khattak and Ms. Sadaf Naigar) and students to highlight the importance of DNA in life. She also emphasized on the importance of research in our country and need of female researchers. The Worthy Vice Chancellor motivated the students to put their efforts in the field of research and to make the country proud. At the end students were awarded with certificates and cash money for best poster, model and stage performance. Best poster award was given on idea of cloning, best model award was given to students presenting idea of genetically modified animals and best stage performance award was given for skit based on idea of identification of baby, exchanged in hospital. These kinds of events motivate students for science day celebration.
